Lotus Silk in Phom Penh

Lotus Silk was founded by Vannary San back in 2003 with the purpose of promoting local silk sourced from weaver communities in the provinces. The social enterprise also has several full-time employees at the beautiful showroom/workshop in Phnom Penh, including a group of female tailors, who are offered a nice work environment and a salary significantly higher than what the average garment factory worker makes.

It was a common friend that introduced me to Vannary, and it soon turned out that we had several common acquaintances including Kanary from CWSG and Midori from Japan, who started Osaka bakery, which I have previously blogged about on my other blog. It’s a small world, isn’t it?

Lotus Silk’s designs are inspired by trends from Japan and Korea with an emphasis on classic designs and cute details, which I think is a great addition to the bolder patterns and designs from A.N.D. At Fair Fashionista, we do not stock silk items, unless it is Peace Silk or vintage/upcycled silk, so Lotus Silk sources different kinds of upcycled fabrics at the local markets in Phnom Penh for the Fair Fashionista garments.

Vannary also arranges different kinds of workshops, where you can try out traditional weaving and tie-dying. You can read more about Lotus Silk on the website, and if you are in Phnom Penh, you can get in touch with Vannary and arrange a visit to the shop.
